Jhomolhari Trek II ( Days)

The most popular trek in Bhutan. It offers views of Mt. Jomolhari (alt. 7,314m) Jichu Darke (6989m), Tsherim Gang (6789m) and leads through lakes, high pasture land, passes (Bontela pass alt. 4890m, Tahungla pass alt. 4520m, Thombula pass, 4380m) gorges and valleys. We may have opportunity to spot snow leopard and blue sheep.

Day 1: Arrive Paro.
Flight into Paro with Druk Air, Bhutan National Airline . The flight takes you over the great Himalayan ranges , offering the most beautiful scenery of the snow-capped mountains and lush valleys. As you enter Paro valley, you will see the Paro Dzong (Fort), the National Museum and the Paro town. Transfer to hotel . Check in and later Lunch .
After lunch, a short excursion to Dzongdrakha monastery . Evening Return to hotel Dinner and overnight at Hotel .

Day 2.  Excursion to Taktsang Monastery, visit historical places. 
Following breakfast, drive 10km north through the beautiful valley of Paro and hike to Taktsang (tiger’s Den) monastery hanging on a cliff 800m above the valley. In the 8th century Guru Rimpoche flew here on the back of a tigress in one of his eight forms called Guru Dorje Drolo and meditated for 3 months in a cave and converted Paro valley into Buddhism. Later in the 17th century, the 4th temporal ruler of Bhutan Tenzin Rabgye built this present temple and named it Taktsang meaning; tiger’s lair in the same spot where Guru meditated. This temple is one of the most sacred and also a pilgrimage centre for Buddhists from all over the world. Overnight at hotel.

Day 03:   Drukgyel Dzong  -  Shana Distance: 17km, Time:  6 hours
Following breakfast drive to  trek starting point . Start trek following the river gently uphill through a narrow agricultural valley, passing by village houses. It is a well worn trail with lots of round stones and irrigation water running down it. Continue journey until camp at 2850m. Overnight at camp . 

Day 04:  Shana  - Thangthangkha Distance: 20km, Time: 7-8 hours 3619m
After breakfast Continue trek to uphill through river valley. It is a long hard day with lots of short ups and downs. The trail makes a continuous but gentle climb through oak rhododendrons and ferns, birch and firs, crossing several small streams finally arriving to Thangthangkha campsite . Overnight at tented camp .

Day 05: Thangthangkha  -  Jangothang Distance: 16km, Time: 5-6 hours Altitude:4,080 m
Following breakfast Continue up the Pa Chhu (river).  Pass a small army post where the valley begins to widen again.  Views of high ridges and snow-capped peaks can be seen all around.  Camp beneath a ruined fortress at the base of Mount Jhomolhari.  Overnight at tented camp .

Day 06:   Jangothang  - Soi Yaksha Distance: 16km, Time: 6-7 hours 3800m
Breakfast and continue journey leads north to the last settlement in the valley and drops to the Paro Chhu . Switch back up the side of the hill to a glare cirque and the lake of Tsho Phu (4380m) . Stay on the eastern side of the lake, passing a second lake as the trail climbs across a slope to a crest. Descend into a hidden valley and climb steeply to Bontela pass at alt. 4890m. From the pass the route descends steep slope, then winds down a ridge with many crisscrossing yak trails, finally switchbacks down to the Dhumzo Chhu. Trek down stream below the few houses of Dhumzo to a bridge and continue a short distance to a camp . Overnight in tented camp. 

Day 07:  Soi Yaksa – Thombu Shong Distance: 11km, Time 4-5 hours

After breakfast start trek to Takhung La pass (4520m) , a short descent leads to Thombu Shong (4180m) with a open pasture land with 3 yak herders’ huts. Overnight in camp. 

Day 08: Thombu Shong – Sharna Zampa. Distance: 13km, Time: 4-5 hours.
Following breakfast Climb valley to Thombula pass( 4380m) , then descend gradually to about 4000m. Continue steep descent, switch backing down the ridge, finally reaching the helipad at Gunitsawa (2730m). Camp here or walk further down past the army camp and camp below village houses near a stream. Overnight in tented camp. 

Day 09:  Sharna Zampa – Drukgyel Dzong- ThimphuDistance; 17km, Time: 4-5 hours
After breakfast we follow Day 3 program of the same trek in reverse. On arrival at Drukgyel dzong, picked up by our vehicle and drive to Thimphu. On arrival check in to the hotel. Dinner and overnight at hotel .

Day 10. Thimphu sightseeing. Sightseeing of Thimphu valley. Evening, drive to Punakha.
Enjoy full day of sightseeing that includes Buddha Point , Memorial Chorten,  Changangkha Lhakhang , Mini Zoo , Sangaygang view point, Nunnery , National Library,  Handicrafts Emporiums, National Institute for Zorig Chusum (thirteen traditional arts & crafts) , Traditional medicine Institute Tashichhodzong , traditional weaving centre , at the industrial estate at Changzamtog, Bhutanese paper factory and philatelic emporium , Craft Bazzar.  
Drive to Punakha, the winter residence of chief abbot. The road climbs for about an hour till you reach a pass at Dochula Pass at an altitude of 3150M  and this pass offers the most spectacular view over the high peaks of the eastern Himalayas. On arrival, check in to the Hotel and Overnight .

Day 11  Punakha Sightseeing. 
Visit the Punakha Dzong some 7-8 km away from the hotel. Punakha Dzong is the most impressive dzong in Bhutan situated in the confluence of Phochhu & Mochhu (male & female rivers). Later Drive some 8 km north; cross the suspension bridge and hike for 45 minutes to a newly built Kham Sum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten built by one of the 4 queen mothers for the protection of the country and to bring peace in the world.

Following lunch visit Chime Lhakhang - was built in 1499 by his descendent Ngawang Chogyel. This temple is popularly known as “temple of fertility” and is the pilgrim site for couple who are unable to bear children. Overnight at hotel .

Day 12 Drive Punakha – Paro.
Following breakfast, drive back the same way to Thimphu crossing over Dochula pass. Lunch at Thimpu . After lunch, 2 hours drive to Paro. Overnight at Hotel .

Day 13 Final Departure 
Following breakfast, drive to airport for your return flight. Farewell and wish you safe journey back home.
